Cooney and Associates, P.C., a group private practice in speech pathology, for the past 30 years Cheryl has fulfilled her professional dream. An active volunteer in the Leicester Community, she was co-chair of the Council on Aging during the planning and building phases of the Leicester Senior Center in the 1990s. She was the coordinator of the Leicester Food Pantry for 10 years, earning the Partners in a Vision Award in 2010 and the Harvester Award in 2011 from the Worcester County Food Bank. In 2018, she was honored by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women with the Unsung Heroine Award for her dedicated service and contributions to the Town of Leicester. She and her family, husband Mick and daughter Megan, enjoy traveling and spending time at their summer home on Cape Cod. In an effort to provide much-needed funding for social service non-profits in Leicester, Cheryl co-founded Deja New. They raised two sons and a step-daughter here in town. Deb is known by many in town as “the Shack Lady” for Leicester Little League. She ran the “shack” for many years. She also held the office of Vice President and Player Agent for Leicester Little League. She coached Peewee Soccer for several years. Deb now works for Boston Children’s Hospital as a Compliance Auditor and holds several coding credentials; CPC, CEMC, CGIC, & CRC. She is also the president of the Leicester Chapter of Hearts for Heat (they help people in town with their winter heating needs). She is a huge Disney fan and also a fan of the Boston Sports teams, especially the Red Sox and Patriots. When asked why she co-formed Deja New, the answer was -because it needs to be done. She attended Leicester schools and went on to complete courses in higher education. After she finished school, Karen married Jim Durant, her husband of 38 years who worked at UPS and was an active member in the Leicester Lions’ Club. Karen has three children, Robert, Andrew, and Thomas. Rob is married to Beckie, and they have a child, Landon, who is Karen’s pride and joy. Robert is a local artisan who sells hand-made leather goods through Deja New and other outlets. His business is called Off the Bench Leatherworks. Thomas works in construction and was extremely instrumental in helping Deja New renovate its current location. As a young mother, Karen owned and operated Cakes by Karen in the center of town, supplying the town with delicious baked goods for nearly 20 years. She later became an EMT for the Leicester EMS Department and worked in that position for many years. Throughout her career, Karen volunteered her time, especially as an active member of the Leicester Mother’s Club. A few years ago, Karen started an in-home crafting business called Karen’s Little Bow-tique. She makes beautiful hand-made hair ribbons and headbands for all occasions. As a crafter, she approached Deja New about the possibility of selling her wares at the shop and then stayed to help volunteer. Now she is a member of the Board of Directors. In her words, “I believe strongly in the cause. Upon her return, she entered the business world in finance and human resources but ultimately came back to the teaching profession as a technology teacher at Leicester High School. Linda attended Leicester High School and Anna Maria College. She went on to earn two master’s degrees: one from Clark University and the other from Framingham State University. Her educational experiences in art, finance, and technology have helped her undertake many volunteer activities in the Town of Leicester. When asked why she volunteers at Deja New, she said, “ I have a heart for service and want to use my skills and knowledge to help others.” Linda currently lives in Leicester with her husband of 43 years, Wayne Colby. They raised money to purchase immediate necessities and later helped with long-term replacement items. In partnership with Deja New, Ava LaPointe, Olivia Luczyk, and Jacob Zawalick - all LHS seniors and NHS scholars successfully completed their community service project. For this program, Deja New purchased $1,000 worth of gift cards from Leicester restaurants. Shoppers who spent $25 or more were able to pick a “gold coin” out of the Pot ‘O Gold, which contained a gift card from one of our local restaurants. This project was a win for all. This fundraiser along with a CPR fundraiser hosted by Nate Hagglund provided funds for food, housing, and transportation to and from Ohio. Maddie is a child in Leicester who suffers from a form of epilepsy where she experiences medication-resistant seizures daily. This is a lifelong genetic disorder that causes bones to break very easily, usually without any type of injury. We also help families in crisis pay bills or purchase necessities that they may not be able to afford. In emergencies, we have provided furniture to fire victims and worked with the Leicester School Department to furnish an apartment for an exchange teacher from Egypt. In addition to providing financial support, Deja New also has a Medical Device Loan Program. We have transport chairs, wheelchairs, a knee scooter, a walker, shower seats, and raised commodes.
